Light requirements
Bright to shady spots are welcome. If the ground is rich in humus or clay based the coloured cultivars can tolerate a little bit of morning or evening sun.

Soil requirements
Hakonechloa macra does best in rich in humus to sandy-clayey soil. Sandy soil is also tolerated in shady locations. Then the Hakone Grass has to be watered regularly.
Moisture requirements
In its natural habitat Hakone Grass is growing on moist rocky cliffs in the mountain forest. So it needs evenly moist soil the year round. Especially if it is placed in part sun.
